LITE Games Canasta App Review (Canasta – The Card Game)

Our verdict: Canasta – The Card Game by LITE Games is a free, polished app for Classic Canasta on iPhone, iPad and Android. You get computer partners whose strength you can adjust, plus online games against players worldwide. Two things to know before you download: it uses classic rules (11 cards, 5,000 points), not the Modern American Canasta most US clubs play, and the free version shows ads. A no-ads subscription costs $0.99 a month or $4.49 a year on the US App Store.

If you learned Canasta from a parent or grandparent, there’s a good chance you learned the classic game: 11 cards each, jokers and 2s wild, and first to 5,000. That’s the game LITE Games has built, and its iPhone version has a 4.4-star average from about 8,500 ratings.

I looked at what the app offers, how its rules compare with what you may play at home or at your club, and what the ads and subscription mean in practice.

What is the LITE Games Canasta app?

Canasta – The Card Game is made by LITE Games GmbH, a German studio that publishes classic card, board and dice games for phones and tablets. Its other titles include Farkle, Rummy and Backgammon apps.

The app runs on iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets. You can download it from the App Store or Google Play. LITE Games’ own help pages say there is no Windows PC or web version.

It’s free to download. The developer says there is no real money and no prizes to be won in the app.

Which Canasta rules does it use?

This is the most important point for American players. The app plays Classic Canasta, not Modern American Canasta.

RuleLITE Games app (Classic)Modern American Canasta (CLA)
Cards dealt11 each13 each
Game target5,000 offline, 3,000 online8,500

First meld minimum15 / 50 / 90 / 120, by team score50 / 90 / 120 / 150, by team score
Going outAt least one canastaAt least two canastas

In the app, you need at least one canasta (seven cards or more) to go out. Natural canastas score 500 and mixed canastas 300. Red threes go straight to the table, and black threes block the discard pile.

You can’t change the target score in either mode. Offline games run to 5,000, and online games are capped at 3,000 so leaderboard results stay comparable.

If you play Modern American Canasta at your club, the app will feel close but not the same. The scoring, the meld minimums and the going-out rules are different. For the American game, see our Canasta Junction review.

The app does not offer Hand and Foot.

Playing against the computer

Offline, you play a four-player partnership game with a computer partner against two computer opponents. You can set the strength of both your partner and your opponents, which is useful when you’re still learning.

The App Store listing says you can change “a large variety of rules” offline. The help pages don’t list those options, so I can’t confirm which rules you can change.

The game rules are available inside the app, through the main menu.

Playing online

Online, you play against players from around the world. There are two modes:

  • Four players: standard partnership rules.
  • Two players: standard rules, but you draw two cards.

A win earns 3 leaderboard points. If you leave a game before it ends, your team loses and gets 0 points.

You can add players to a friends list and challenge friends and family directly.

Some App Store reviewers report dropped connections and games counted as losses after a disconnect. I couldn’t check how often that happens, but if you play online on a patchy connection, keep it in mind.

Design and ease of use

LITE Games highlights the app’s design and animation, and you can customize how the table and cards look. There are achievements to collect as you play.

The app is available in English plus several other languages, including French, German, Italian, Spanish and Turkish.

Ads and the no-ads subscription

The free app is paid for by advertising. It shows ads in the app, and it tracks identifiers and usage data for advertising, according to its App Store privacy label.

Some reviewers mention long ads, or ads they couldn’t close. If ads bother you, the no-ads subscription is cheap. US App Store prices:

  • 1 month: $0.99
  • 3 months: $1.99
  • 12 months: $4.49

The subscription renews automatically. Turn off auto-renewal at least 24 hours before the period ends if you don’t want to be charged again.

  • Want quick online games against strangers, without a membership

It’s not the right app if you play Modern American Canasta at a club, or if you want Hand and Foot.
